How to Stop Virgin Media Twitter Banner Ad

this post is a little off the beaten track for unlock world tv. Its also specific to UK users. But having looked for a solution to this, i was absolutely shocked by both Virgin Media’s attitude to its invasiveness and its design flaw.

Not sure what I mean? Take a look at the screenshot below. The banner can half cover the search bar, profile menu button and the new tweet button. Its a horrific piece of ad design.

Virgin Media’s support confirmed it “only appears on 3G and 4G”, for clarity, thats every “G” available in the UK. They may as well have said it only happens in the day and the night.

They also confirmed they would NOT remove the banner, nor had any plans to despite there being many complaints.

I got sick of it, so i thought, “Why not fire up the VPN that might help!”. Sure enough, this is actually the only workaround for it.By encrypting your web traffic, even on mobile networks neither the provider nor the app can see what you are doing. in this instance the outcome is that the banner ad would not be served.

The process is simple

  1. make sure you are on a mobile network
  2. Close the twitter app
  3. start up your VPN
  4. choose any location, I used UK as its a better ping in almost almost all cases due to sheer proximity
  5. Open Twitter app
  6. Don’t be annoyed anymore

At first glance, this might sound overkill. But remember, you can simply set your VPN app to always be on. You wouldn’t notice any drop in either app performance, or streaming performance because you would be using a local server.

This is one use for VPNs i never thought i would need it for. Blocking unwanted ads!!
